Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

First of all, the controller feels great. It's very comfortable in my hands. I'm using this controller primarily for PC gaming, so I will be reviewing it with that perspective in mind.
Pros:
--Triggers
The triggers feel a little cheaper than Xbox One controller triggers, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the triggers are dual stage with pressure sensitivity. I tested this in Super Mario Sunshine, since the game relies on dual stage triggers to play correctly.
--Thumbsticks
The thumbsticks are concave, like Xbox thumbsticks, with ridges for grip. They feel good and output true analog control; it's not a digital 8-directional output like many other cheaper thumbsticks.
--D-Pad
I was very impressed with this D-Pad. I was expecting this to be the most compromising feature, but this is the best d-pad I have used since the Sega Genesis dpad. I was able to get very precise quarter-circle movements on the d-pad in classic games like Sonic CD and Street Fighter II.
--Bluetooth Connectivity
This controller connects using Bluetooth, which checks a box that the Xbox One controller does not. The only hang-up is that it requires a firmware update before connecting in Windows as expected. The Xbox One controller requires a special dongle in order to wirelessly connect to PC, because it doesn't use industry standard bluetooth technology.
--Batteries
The SteelSeries Stratus XL uses two AA battery slots, which is great. Internal batteries eventually wear out, and when they do you have to replace the entire controller. With this, I can use two rechargeable Eneloop lithium ion batteries. Once the batteries die, I simply put them in the charger and take two fully charged batteries back out. No need to plug any wires into this controller.
--Face Buttons
I commonly read that the face buttons felt spongey. I didn't experience this at all. They have a good solid thunk sensation when pressing them, like the PS4 controller. I also like that they use a standard ABXY layout, since most PC games expect you to be using an Xbox controller.
--Xinput Emulation
This controller also emulates an Xinput device, which is great for certain applications. For example, I often run 3DS games from steam using Citra emulator, but the emulator wants to see Xinput devices. Before with my PS4 controller I had to run an application under the hood to get Citra to recognize it as an Xinput device so I could map the buttons. Xinput emulation means increased compatibility.
Cons:
--No Gyro sensor
Right now I don't think there is a single controller that exists that sports the features I listed above AND gyro capabilities. This is a real drawback for me, since I have come to rely on the use of gyro sensors in almost every modern game. (This is the only reason I can't give this controller a five star rating). Fortunately for shooters I can use my Steam controller for increased precision, but there are some action/adventure games where gyro capability is extremely helpful.
--Triggers feel a little cheap at times
--Difficult to switch between multiple paired devices.
All in all, I think the controller is a great value, and I would highly recommend it!
But the triggers just weren't right from the get go - the right trigger already felt off on opening it and the left trigger was way too sensitive. Looking at a repair video, the triggers are backed by curved springs, clearly over time these are going to fail easily compared to the pin setup an Xbox controller has in it's triggers.
And the thumbsticks were incredibly imprecise and sit a little too high, not to mention I have grown really comfortable with the XBox layout so the side by side sticks mean I bumped the dpad too often. That thumbstick click is uncomfortable, too, with a thick click.
I did get them adjusted thanks to the companion app, but it was still ever so slightly off and my sniping suffered as a result (used Borderlands GOTY on PC as test).
So yeah, this one isn't going to be the one for me. Compared to even a moderately used XBox One controller, the Stratus XL just didn't work for me. So back to the X1 controller for now...
The only "problem" I had when I got it was the left trigger squeaked. Like a spring rubbing on something sound. Instead of dealing with the return hassle I thought I'd just dig into the controller and see what the deal was (yes, I know, that probably voids the warranty -- a risk I'm willing to take). As I go to take off the back I notice the screws are those devilsh tri-wing screws. So, I had to order a special screwdriver just to get into it which came a couple days later (it was like $6 for 5 of them, why they had a 5 pack of the same screwdriver I don't know).
Once I got in there I noticed someone went trigger happy with the glue. There was a piece of red glue that the spring was rubbing on and causing the subtle -- but highly annoying -- squeak. I used a needle lose to get the glue out of the area and wallah, good to go.
So other than the small annoyance. it works just as well as what I'd anticipate a new one would work.
The only problem I encountered was setting up the controller: It was easy enough to pair as a Bluetooth controller, and even tho it showed as paired, it initially refused to work or show up in the Steelseries Engine App.
After researching the issue it turns out that Microsoft broke most gaming controllers with their October 2018 release. To fix the issue, you need to update the firmware of the controller.
The controller has a USB-mini plug inside the battery compartment. Hook it up with your PC and the controller should show up in Steelseries Engine - at which point it will tell you there is an important update available.
After updating the firmware, delete the controller from your Bluetooth devices list and re-pair it. Remember to cycle controller off to on after it initially paired.
I found this solution buried in a Steam forum and thought to post it here in the hope of saving someone some time in the future.
