For my solution I moved the buttons to the lower two paddle buttons underneath. Having to remap commonly used buttons because the product design placed them out of easy reach is just silly.
As a long time PC Razer user I knew how easy this was going to be to set up in Synapse. It's the expectation of ANY Razer device. It's the one piece of software that if you are familiar with it, you know you won't have any issues with your Razer device. Am I right?
Well, no. Not this time. For reasons unknown Razer's software that configures everything software doesn't recognize this Razer device. And if you are a PC user there's nothing in the manual that actually says you need to download another piece of software to configure the controller. The manual simply says that when you plug it into a PC the driver will be installed. Let me share with you the exact PC usage instructions from the manual:
"On PC
Wait until the controller's drivers are automatically installed or manually update the drivers through Device Manager."
That's it, the sum total of the PC instructions before the manual starts talking about XBox usage again.
So....how do you configure this controller on PC since it doesn't use Synapse? Well, you have to download the elegantly named Razer Controller Setup for Xbox App from the Microsoft store.
With that elegant name for the app, it's pretty clear it's only for use on the XBox, right? Well, wrong. This elegantly named piece of software is what you need to download on your PC in order to control your brand new Chroma controller. From the name, it's pretty clear it's for use on your PC, right? I mean, it says so right there in the name, XBOX. Xbox and PC and the same, right? Maybe someone should let the people at Razer know that they aren't the same.
The bigger problem here, is that if you read the reviews, this has been a complaint for years. For some reason, Razer doesn't want you to configure your new controller in Synapse. Razer doesn't actually tell you what you do need to get and you're left with reviews like this to figure out a product that should have worked with the software you already had installed.
Just think of how much support effort Razer could eliminate with this controller if they simply used Synapse. Or, even, and this one is really tough call, but maybe if they changed that elegant app name to Razer Controller Setup for PC App. It still keeps they grammatic elegance Razer seems to love for this product, but it also indicates its usage on a PC.
And seriously, Razer, why is this labeled a Chroma controller if we can't configure it in Chroma Studio? For lighting you get three settings. Breathing, Static or Color Cycle. No way to tie this supposed Chroma device to the rest of your Chroma devices for system wide color control. And that is, misleading marketing.
If a Razer device says Chroma, I expect it to work in both Synapse and Chroma Studio. Razer apparently feels anything with colored lighting should be called Chroma whether or not you can actually tie it to your system lighting.
Before I get to Razer's shipping deal with Amazon, I should say that mechanically the controller feels good. I'm enjoying using it for the day I've had it, so far and am retraining my muscle memory to use some of the extra buttons/paddles. It feels and sounds great. But it's like it's not really a Razer product, it's just a throw away.
Okay, now I want to say, you should consider not buying this via Razer/Amazon based on their shipping. I ordered two of these on the 16th, 9 in stock. An hour later I noticed the white ones would get here sooner. An hour after placing the order, Amazon said it couldn't be cancelled as it was being prepared for shipment. Oh, great. I'd get it sooner. So, on the 17th a label was created. Then nothing until the 22nd when it apparently was placed on a tractor trailer for a slow drive from California to New Hampshire. It was delivered on the 28th. Amazon's famous 11 day Prime delivery, yet I couldn't cancel the order an hour after placing it. If you want one of these quickly, well...
So, I'm docking the controller three stars.
One star is lost for the horrible placement of the view and menu buttons.
One star is lost for this Chroma device not being an actual Chroma device.
One star is lost due to the horrible documentation that doesn't actually address PC users.
Mechanically it's a 4 star controller. If the View and Menu buttons were easy to reach it would be 5 stars hands down. The rest is Razer cutting off its nose to spite its face.
And seriously, Razer, if you are going to say "For Gamers by Gamers" please make sure the person designing your controller is an actual gamer. A real gamer would have known those two buttons are poorly placed.
PROS:
- Build quality is incredible. I've had Razer peripherals before (I use a Razer Blade Advanced 15" and a Blackwidow V2) and have always been impressed with the materials and build quality, and this controller is no exception. It comes with a good quality carrying case, a nice braided cable, it has a great textured coating and has some heft to it compared with the Xbox controllers. Yes, it's corded (which I prefer, because I don't have to deal with batteries/charging, disconnecting, loose battery compartments, etc), but the entire controller is very evidently made of high-quality plastic and metal components and just feels amazing.
- Appearance: To my eyes, it looks fantastic. The Chroma lighting strip looks awesome and is customizable, and switches based on controller profile (more on that later), and the silver triggers and subtle Xbox button just look awesome. Look at the photos and form your own opinion, but I think in person it looks fantastic and surprisingly subtle and high-end.
- Features: The highlights here include 6x remappable additional buttons (one by each set of triggers and bumpers, and two on each side on the back of the controller under the battery compartment). They all click well, are easy to find and reach naturally, and provide a TON of utility. It also has trigger locks, which shorten the trigger pull on the triggers significantly with a mechanical stop and are hugely helpful in shooter games. I use the two extra buttons by the bumpers and the trigger locks almost constantly for Elder Scrolls: Online, Rocket League, Warzone, and a whole host of other games, and I can already definitively say that I could never go without them now - they honestly have a MASSIVE impact on your gaming experience. There are also buttons on the controller for swapping profiles, mic muting, a re-map button, and a sound button that lets you adjust both master volume level and gamechat balance. The joysticks are also removable and can be swapped out for the included taller/convex joystick, or swapped easily with each other to reduce uneven wear. There are two different included D-pads which can be swapped - I love the one with 4 individual buttons vs the cross design and think it is loads better than the normal Xbox controller "cross" design. You can also adjust the vibrations motor intensity in 4 different regions on the controller, which is great for reducing or increasing the vibration sensitivity depending on the game you are playing.
- Software: Synapse on Xbox works shockingly well and lets you remap the additional buttons to any other button on the controller (i.e. I have left on the d-pad assigned to the left side macro button, and right stick click mapped to the right side macro button), as well as "agility" and "accuracy" settings which reduce or increase the look/movement speed sensitivity when either held or toggled, which is a pretty cool feature. You can assign two different profiles to the controller itself, and can toggle between them using a button on the controller - these profiles each have their own RGB lighting settings, joystick sensitivities, macro button mapping, vibration levels in different areas of the controller, etc - a blue/green LED on the controller informs you of which profile you are currently using.
CONS:
- Wired: As I mentioned, this is a wired controller, which I actually prefer but obviously many people will see this as an inconvenience. The only upside is the nice long braided cable with a breakaway section in case someone trips on it or similarly pulls on it.
- No adjustable joystick or trigger tension settings: The trigger locks are either on or off and shorten the stroke of the trigger pull, but don't actually have adjustable tension or stroke. The joysticks do not have any adjustable tension, but they do have adjustable sensitivities in the Synapse app.
- Included Joysticks: This one doesn't annoy me because I love the default joysticks, but the controller only comes with one taller joystick and one convex joystick to swap out, rather than two of each.
Overall Take: I personally love this controller! It's perfect for my needs, it's an order of magnitude better for more intense/hardcore gaming than a regular Xbox One controller with some excellent added functionality, and it has significantly better build quality. Given my experiences with previous Microsoft and Razer products, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this controller over either the Xbox One controller or the Xbox Elite controller - it's loads better than the base controller and (in my opinion) better designed and more reliable than the Elite Controller, which has a TERRIBLE online reputation for reliability and durability. If you are looking for a controller that is reliable, high-quality, and loaded with mechanical/software features, and can deal with the fact that the controller is corded, this is the controller for you.

Saludos!

My love life is non-existent
My truck broke down
I'm out of beer
I bought this over the elite v2 because they drift harder than DK from the fast and the furious movie.
