Microsoft to Make Installing & Updating Drivers Easier on Windows 10
Posted: September 10,2022
The next big update for Windows 10 will make it easier for users to find and install optional drivers for their software. Microsoft announced the feature as part of the Build 19356, which is expected to arrive on our PCs sometime in the first half of 2020.
Windows 10 already comes with automatic driver installation should matching hardware be found. Administrators can install optional versions of the drivers. However, in order to install updates manually, you currently have to go several menus deep into Device Manager or use third party software.
Microsoft plans to streamline this process by adding the “view optional upgrades” button in the Windows Update interface. Clicking the button allows users signed into Administrator accounts to check out optional driver updates in their own section.
There is no word yet on how these will differ from driver updates usually prioritized by Microsoft. But it's safe to expect the inclusion of older or new beta version drivers for software such as graphics cards.
Despite the new addition, Windows Update will continue operating as it did up to now. Users can choose whether they want the updates delivered automatically or if they prefer getting notified about each one. In the latter case, users can choose whether they want to download and install the recommended updates or the optional ones.
This new feature is sure to please enthusiasts who love having complete control over their drivers. It is also good news for people who hate having to install external software or digging through myriad Windows menus in order to upgrade their drivers manually.
