The good stuff: Very easy setup and configuration, including using the Android app on an inexpensive MotoE phone. I was very pleased that it could be used without spending $1K on an iPhone or Galaxy. Very Good picture quality. The pan and zoom and cut functions are very cool and help to add visual interest to a single viewpoint. It still is, of course, a single, wide-angle, point of view, and it must be placed fairly close to the subject in most applications like a performance by a band or a panel discussion.
The limitations: You can livestream OR record in 4K..... NOT both simultaneously. Streaming is, as with any streaming, completely dependant upon having a solid connection. I used the Boost to establish a connection via ethernet cable directly to my cable modem and easily got a connection. I was very disappointed, however, to find that YouTube flagged the quality of the stream from the Mevo as very weak, due entirely to my connection…..NOT the cameras fault.
This made me think about the wisdom of embedding the streaming solution in an otherwise very cool remote control 4K video camera. Most of what I do is remote and in an environment with poor cellular connectivity at best. Often, I don’t have the lead time to negotiate a hardline Ethernet connection at each site so I’m limited to run-of-the-mill Wi-fi. In addition, The Boosts 10-hour battery doesn’t buy me much if I’m relying on my cell phone for network connectivity.
Bottom Line: This is a very cool, remote control 4K video camera with a built in streaming capability. If you are confident that your network environment will provide sufficient bandwidth to allow it to be practical in delivering LIVE video via the Internet, go for it!
In my case (limited, unpredictable network environment), I packed it up and started a return process with Amazon. If I invest in a streaming device going forward, it will likely be one that allows me to stream from any video input that I choose rather than one that is bundled with a specific camera.
Every video has some static noise during moments of silence, even when built-in mic sensitivity is low. I confirmed with Mevo that this is part of the design and is not unique to my unit.
I have attached a video to demonstrate this. Microphone sensitivity varies from 0 to 30db
In the video 0-15 seconds : 10db
16-23 seconds: 12db
24-30 seconds: 5db
31-35 seconds: 25db (here it picks up the buzz of fluorescent lights as well)
Rest of the video, back at 10db
Customer service, after acknowledging device's weakness, said that they recommend external audio source, and that it is unlikely to get a fix for it.
I have maintained my previous 2-star rating because it does one thing well, simple video broadcasting. It does not provide quality audio. I'm okay with the video quality since for my use, it will be seen mostly on smartphones. However this is where audio still matters, and I am in the process of testing ADDITIONAL purchased equipment to make audio better.
PREVIOUS REVIEW:
No doubt this was meant to be a game changer, and it was close. Here are two ways it fails. If you have a work-around, let me know.
1) charging is proprietary. My understanding is that this was not the case with the original mevo. You cannot charge the mevo plus with a generic external battery bank to lengthen recording time. I asked customer support and they confirmed this. They suggested I try plugging in the mevo plus directly into the wall with the charger that came in the box.
Yes, that really happened. :-|
My mevo plus begins charging from an external battery after it is completely drained. That means it stops streaming, and then it would need to be plugged in. What boggles my mind is we got it to work once, and reproducing the same circumstances did not work. So there is some sort of combination that will fool the software. Let me know if you figure it out.
2) Microphone - The microphone level has to be set. It is either on, or off, and you set decibel level. This does mean that it needs to be manually adjusted when switching from a full band to a speaker. The only way around this with strictly the base device is to feed an audio signal from the mixer to the device on which you are using the app.
3) Device gets very hot, I can't imagine this being a good thing for a memory card or the longevity of the device.
In the end, you will feel pressured to make it a "full-fledged" device by spending an additional $250 for the Mevo Boost Accessory. Without it, it's pointless for any event more than 40 minutes.
While the connectivity between mevo plus and remote device leaves something to be desired, the connectivity between the mevo plus and router is pretty stable.
I would recommend that you have two devices to run this: 1) for the general management for the audio and video and 2) as the auxiliary mic for the camera. The built in microphone is average at best. Even an iPhone microphone is better. You can link another device to the camera as a stage mic and have it populate sound to your video in real time while also being closer to the action.
