How it Works
KeepKey works with the bitcoin wallet software on your computer by taking over the management of private key generation, private key storage, and transaction signing.
Initialization and Back-Up
|
|
|
---|---|---|
InitializationKeepKey generates your Bitcoin private key using its hardware-based random number generator, combined with randomness provided by your computer. Once your private key is generated, you are given the one-time opportunity to write down a backup of your KeepKey in the form of a twelve-word recovery sentence. |
Pin ProtectA PIN protects your device against unauthorized use in the event your KeepKey falls into the wrong hands.
Even if your KeepKey is stolen, it cannot be accessed without the correct PIN. The number placement is re-scrambled at random each time you connect your device, so even a key-logger cannot decipher your PIN because the numbers are only shown on the device. |
ShapeShiftIntegrated with Shapeshift for seamless exchanges among supported assets. |
Transacting
KeepKey's large display gives clarity to every bitcoin leaving the device. Each transaction must be manually approved using KeepKey's confirmation button.
Secure Storage
Your private key is stored securely on your KeepKey, never leaving the device. Your KeepKey is PIN-protected, which renders it useless even if it falls into the wrong hands.
Recover
If your KeepKey is lost or stolen, you can safely recover your device without compromising its private keys.

Cons: Current KeepKey extension only supports 'Bitcoin' although other currencies are expected to be added within the next few weeks according to a support desk response. Which is more of an inconvenience that a con. Other currencies can be stored by locating different supporting wallet clients.
I held out for this over cheaper flimsier junk out on the market which reviews have shown to be a problem with constant use. This hardware wallet is built around a rock solid aluminum case with a single micro-usb port and a 1 button. The LED screen is bright and easy to read. The braided usb cable that comes with it is also of high quality. You get what you pay for, and I opted for the best. Installation is simple, plug in the cable, plug in the KeepKey and follow a few short steps. Remember to keep your password recovery sentence in a safe place NOT with your KeepKey device. Each time you use it, you'll be asked for your pin, only the method for keying it in (read this part as clicking spaces on a 9 spaced square) changes randomly every time you use it. Making it virtually impossible for malware or keyloggers to get this information. That's it, you plug it in when you want to send or receive coins, and put it away safely when you're done. Your bitcoin, litecoin, doge or other supported currencies are safe. Lose your device or oh; I don't know, run over it with a steam roller?, and you can use your recovery sentence to access your coins once a new device is ordered. Currently if you want to store anything besides bitcoin you need to find another wallet client like Electrum or Multibit-HD that support the KeepKey device. I have a friend with a more flimsy usb stick hardware wallet who after only a few weeks is having issues with the device showing signs of wear and impending damage. Did I mention this thing is built like a tank? It can handle multiple wallets as well as multiple currencies, it's the device for people serious about crypto-currencies and keeping them secure. Nothing is stored on your computer so that once you unplug it, there's nothing left behind where someone snooping through histories or files will find anything. While the price may seem steep to some, it's a better overall value than anything like it on the market currently. I had high expectations for this when I ordered it, and I was NOT disappointed. If you're serious about securing your own bitcoin, quit playing games with that other crap and get the real deal.
Update April 27, 2018. I have sent and received Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin with this KeepKey. It works easily and is a great way to keep your private key private versus vulnerable online with a website. Five stars.
Update May 5, 2018. I want to love this device I do, but when the device/chrome extension have issues which cause a perpetual "loading accounts" screen then it's time to ditch it. More importantly is the lack of support and to that I mean software updates and proactive effort. KeepKey seems to be more in a reaction position than anything else. I had difficulty moving funds as well due to legacy issues with Litecoin as well as hangups with Ethereum. Compare this to Trezor, where the legacy litecoin address was not only identified by information was given on how to fix the problem. And the great intergration with MyEtherWallet and Trezor. Thank goodness that cryptocurrency in general is very secure and the design of it allowed me to put my KeepKey seed words in my Trezor and move the finds from there. It is no surprise that you can now get a KeepKey for $40 where now Trezors are going up to $99 and up. I have confidence in Trezor and so much so I bought another one. Keep in mind these hardware wallets simply take your seed words and use them to generate your private keys, they never have "secret/backdoor" access to the company of KeepKey, Trezor or Ledger. You can also do this via paper wallets but less secure for obvious reasons.

I specifically wanted a hardware wallet to keep my Titanium BAR coins (an ERC20 coin).
It arrived in a little black box with a silver security seal (obviously if this is broken, it's not to be trusted and should be sent back).
There wasn't much info on their site regarding Token coins, but seeing as the Ledger S is currently on Pre-Order, I thought I would take the gamble.
It is extremely easy to set up, using just a simple Chrome web browser plugin.
You NEED to make sure you write down the passphrase when it shows as it will not show again, and if you lose this, you wont be able to gain access if you forget your pin. You can reset the device but this will wipe the data of any previously held wallets.
The product, although having a plastic casing, seems very well built with a nice big clear display on the front.
The device is recognised as soon as you plug it into a PC (i'm running Windows 10), and will power up instantly.
There is no battery in the device so you cannot use it without it being plugged in via a USB, the same kind used on most Android devices.
I'm struggling to understand why it would be difficult for them to implement something similar to what the MyEtherWallet does, where you give the name of the token, the token symbol, and the number of decimals, and once this is done, you can then add your token coins.. I may be completely missing something here, which is very possible as I'm no "Expert".
Anyway, I reached out to the KeepKey guys (they responded very quickly) to ask about possible future updates and here is their response:

Hi *****,
Thank you for your message! KeepKey has a very robust 2018 roadmap. ERC20 token support is coming to your KeepKey device early in 2018. The first tokens we will support include SALT, Aragon, Augur, BAT, Civic, Golem, Gnosis, OmiseGo, District 0x and FunFair. Many more will be added in the coming months. Your KeepKey will not require integration with a third party application in order to utilize ERC20 token support; it will be native to the KeepKey hardware wallet and application.
We have had strong and healthy growth in product demand in 2017. Our development team is expanding constantly, allowing us to further advance token, coin, and feature support in the upcoming year. However, as a matter of policy, we will only announce future support and features that are nearest and fall within 60 days of release to our customers.
Thank you for supporting KeepKey!
-Andrew

I've opened the box now so cant send back, I can only hope they are quick to update their wallet to support as many coins as possible.
This isn't YET as good as the Ledger S in my opinion, but that could and hopefully will become a better wallet given the cost of this is about £50 more than the Ledger S.
I will update this review if it needs it once they start rolling out the updates.
Anyway, hope this review helps someone.
I get peace of mind knowing once disconnected, it was safe and we didn't have to worry about hacking whilst it was offline.
Sounds like a KICKSTARTER project that is struggling to take off :(
