Turns out my brother's macbook had a faulty board in it so both of the thunderbolt plugs were loose. I discovered this when I bought a thunderbolt hard drive from western digital and it had the exact same problem. The computer this hard drive was being used on was covered under warranty so that was taken care of and the hard drive worked just fine after that. I got rid of the Western Digital drive and all is well.
Now about support. I contacted Buffalo and had them send me back the wire I sent them and that went well...but if you wish to hear about my support nightmare read below. The "too long; didn't read" version all I wanted was a replacement cable, they would not do that and didn't bother to contact me and tell me. No one knows what the heck is going on over there and it makes me try to avoid their company in general.
********************************June 2014**************************************
Story time:
I bought this drive for a family member so he could perform time machine backups to make sure his macbook pro was backed up. I noticed it was a well built drive and seemed to have decent speeds. I went with thunderbolt because he needed the other two usb ports and didn't want to have to deal with a hub since this was a laptop and he liked to be on the go.
Right around February of 2014 he informed me that the thunderbolt cable was loose on one of the ends. It always seemed to fit into the drive fine but the macbook would be loose enough to disconnect the drive it was moved ever so slightly. I corrupted the drive once or twice.
I wasn't overly concerned at the time. Since I didn't feel like spending $35 for an official apple thunderbolt cable, I called up their customer support sometime in early March and informed them I wanted to send in the cable and get it replaced. I told my family member to use the USB 3.0 cable until this was all sorted out. I was assured this could be done and was given an RMA number and I went ahead and sent it in.
A few weeks go by and I never received the cable. Since their support has ridiculous hours I wasn't able to call them until later, when I did call them I was informed I didn't have enough information. I gave them the serial number and called them a week later when I didn't hear anything.
I wait again, I was unable to pester them because I had to move. I called them up and asked why I had not received the cable and to inform them they needed to change my address otherwise I would not receive it. They told me they were unable to process my RMA because I only sent in the cable and they needed the entire device.
Rant time:
Back in February, someone had told me the cable could be replaced and I didn't need to send in the entire drive. I could see the device was not the problem, it plugged into the device just fine. The connection from the cable to macbook was shaky so I told them I just needed a new cable. Because the device was being used for backups, I could not send in the entire devices. Also, if they needed the entire device, they should have told me in the first place. If they found out I never sent the device, they should have told me they needed it when they initially received it.
They sat on their hands since the beginning of March not informing me that they needed more information, I had to call them to provide them with information already on the RMA form that I had already filled out. They could of told me any of the numerous time I emailed them and called them they needed the entire device instead of waiting until May (3 months!) to lay that one on me.
Today (June 2014) I called them and informed them I had bought a similar drive from a different company, transferred all of my backups to that drive and I would like to send in my Buffalo drive and be issued a full refund. They said I would have to talk that up with Amazon because they are the people I bought the drive from.
This drive was purchased a year ago, Amazon won't issue me a refund. The best I can do is send in my drive, receive a replacement (probably refurbished) one and try to sell it. Knowing my experience with Buffalo so far, they will probably tell me after I call them a million times I didn't provide them with enough information and keep my drive and I will be out of $150.
I'm sick of dealing with this. Spend the extra $10, buy a drive from a reputable company and avoid Buffalo at all costs. Their products are slightly not as good as the competition, their customer support is a bigger joke than current gas prices, and they will waste your time. I have sold and got rid of everything I have bought from them.
I'm very pleased with the performance and the look of the Buffalo drive. After partitioning it to two separate drives (250GB for TimeMachine backup and the remainder for media archives), I got them encrypted and did a full-backup as well as moving over all the big media files much quicker than the USB or FireWire drives I have. I understand that the drive isn't all that fast but I'm just a business pro and do not use the drive to work on large media files like photos or videos to edit. I'm mainly a business productivity software, email, and web-surfing kind of guy so this drive more than exceeds my needs for backup and just accessing movies to view and having old archives for quick access.
The Buffalo MiniStation is very quiet and it's one really handsome looking piece of gear that matches up nicely with all the other Apple gear I use: the MBA, 27" Thunderbolt Display, white iPad 2, and white iPhone 4S. It's so quiet that I don't even notice that it's doing a backup. It's also great to know that I have ample space left for future archiving of movies, music and photos that I don't need on the MBA. Accessing the files from the drive is as fast as I'd ever need it to be. I did notice that the copy/write speed is about 100MB/sec as another reviewer noted, which is plenty fast enough for my modest needs. This drive isn't cheap for 1TB storage space but that's plenty big and the fast performance, portability, and being able to use the MBA's Thunderbolt port are all big pluses for a business pro on the move. Highly recommended.
These compact Buffalo Thunderbolt drives are quiet in operation, contribute little noise to music, and include one unnecessary source of sound distortion from six magnetic ,stainlesss-steel, retaining screws inside. If you want to eliminate that, lever off the top of the drive (held in place by some adhesive inside) by gently working a screw driver all around the edges slowly for 10 minutes. Then you can take six 5mm 4/40 flat-headed brass screws from your hardware store or McMaster-Carr and replace those magnetic stainless steel retaining screws inside. That will bring greater clarity and better tone to your music.
I found that placing a piece of MuMetal between two pieces of cork under the drive had the effect of opening up the music. (Placing FoQ/ Faraday fabric or anything else inside the drive simply causes overheating.)
If using the drive with a Mac, I recommend selecting 'GUID Partition Map' under Scheme and either 'APFS' or 'APFS Encrypted' under Format when erasing the drive in Disk Utility. While it's true that APFS was developed as a much quicker, more efficient file/ metadata system for the flash drives, it also works well on mechanical drives and makes musical sound as though it is playing more effortlessly with less resistance.
I highly recommend these drives.

First a bit of background.
I have a computer that used the original proprietary thunderbolt that Apple computers created out of thin air.It was great for it's time because it allowed for industry leading transfer speeds. But in 2022, there are faster options. However, the fastest option for my device is this thunderbolt port with an extremely limited amount of options available.I have looked at options using converters and adapters and it is a nightmare. Utilizing the thunderbolt port allows me to free up my other usb ports for peripherals.
This hard drive is reliable. I have been using it for over a year now without any issue. It serves as a media storage device to keep media for taking up space on my computer's internal memory. The device will work right out of the box but i do suggest being familiar with DiskUtility to get the best performance.
The build is small enough that it rests on the iMac base with room to spare. It is not the smallest hard drive i have ever used though.
A few things to note about this hard drive.
1. It is Thunderbolt 1 proprietary . it will only work with the original thunderbolt port. Even to search for a compatible device online is a challenge.
2. As a result, it will only work on mac's form very particular time period. Before 2016 I believe. Mine is a 2011.You will need to check your compatibility.
3. It is not a solid state drive SSD which is what i was hoping for. So depending on your usage, there may be some lagging. I personally haven't experienced any.
In summary, if this is compatible for you, it is a Joy to have.
One star removed because the price is higher than i was hoping or for such old technology.
TLDR: Great for thunderbolt 1 devices
The bad news is that when I used the cable provided with the drive to link the Buffalo to my trusty early MacBook Air, a puff of smoke came from the port and the screen went dark.
I looked inside the case of the Air and the only chip that seems to be fried is the one that powers the Thunderbolt port. (at top right of board). The Air is dead, long live the Air. Now I am afraid to use the Buffalo on my new Air.
I was looking for a wireless networked backup solution for a Macbook Pro. Messed around with a few external solutions that claimed to be Mac compatible. After unboxing the only thing they provided were tentacles & disappointment.
Then I found the Buffalo MiniStation. Wanting to preserve the lack of USB port on the Mac for other devices - the thunderbolt connections was an alternative I had not thought of. A big plus - a thunderbolt cable is included along with a 3.0 usb cable.
Incredibly fast backup when using the thunderbolt connection on a Macbook Pro with a Solid State drive. The price may seem a bit high but when you consider the cost thunderbolt cable separately then puppy is a bargain.
