WITH BROADBAND PROTECTION
Amazon.com
American Power Conversion's Back-UPS ES 725 Broadband backup power supply offers a combination of 8 total battery-protected and surge-only outlets, effectively reserving power capacity and run time for any connected equipment that requires battery back-up while maintaining surge-only protection for your less critical equipment. Typical backup time at half load is 14 minutes (225 watts), and typical backup time at full load is 4.3 minutes (450 watts).
Power conditioning protects connected loads from surges, spikes, lightning, and other power disturbances, while dataline surge protection provides protection of connected equipment from power surges on the data lines. You can manage the UPS via its handy USB port.
The device is safety-agency approved, so it's guaranteed to work safely with the connected loads and within the environment. Audible alarms provide notification of changing utility power and UPS conditions, and automatic self-testing provides early detection of potential problems through periodic testing of the UPS components.
The unit is cold-start-capable so you'll have temporary battery power even when the utility power is out from the get-go. Resettable circuit breakers grant quick recovery from UPS overload events, and transformer-block spaced outlets protect equipment with input transformer blocks (otherwise known as wall warts) without blocking access to other receptacles.
Hot-swappable batteries provide clean, uninterrupted power to protected equipment throughout battery replacement.
The system comes with PowerChute Personal Edition (Part Number SDW 85, for Windows 98/Me/XP/2000 and Mac OS 9.0.4 or higher), which is safe, easy-to-use system-shutdown software with sophisticated power-management functions. Features include context-sensitive help, graceful system shutdown, a performance summary, self-test checks battery health, and "status at a glance."
Last but certainly not least, APC's lifetime data-recovery warranty provides peace of mind by ensuring professional data-recovery services in the event that data is lost due to the failure of the unit. What's in the Box
Backup power supply, software CD (PowerChute Personal Edition, plus free trial of anti-virus, firewall, e-mail privacy, system recovery, and online backup software), cord-management straps, a USB cable, a user's manual, and warranty information.

Much more frequent the power outages around here are surges and line noise. Some of these are external, but I happen to have a laser printer that draws a lot of current when it wakes up: it used to cause the lights to flicker and occasionally popped the circuit breaker. Now that it's also plugged in to the APC, everything is happy.
The telephone line/Ethernet/coax protection is a nice bonus. Over the years, we lost more electronics to lightning strikes on the phone line than anything else. If you don't have whole-house surge protection on your phone line, this type of protection is a must.
It works if you don't install the software, but the software is the only method to change the settings, such as to turn off the loud beeping that starts if the unit activates; for example, at 3am, even though the computer is off....
