I've spent 5 figures on my sound setup in the past, in a combination of headphones, dac and amp. I eventually got tinnitus which the headphones probably contributed to, as well as the audio gear.

Truth be told, high end audio gear is generally rife with issues, and a lot of it snake oil. And the differences are somewhat minimal.

That being said, there are clear differences as well as strengths and weaknesses to different setups.

This is one of the easier options for strong audio quality for your PC. I got these for the speaker quality and the dac. The DAC is solid but not really great, I think it's clear something with the ESSABRE series chips are going to sound better---but those are also much more expensive. They also start taking up a LOT of space.

With this option, you have everything you need and things work just fine. You'll be happy with the sound quality most likely.

The bass is a bit low, Audioengine has a subwoofer option that might be worth looking into, but again that does add costs and adds space.

I didn't take a star off for it but my product came with a defective cable. It's a standard micro USB and I wound up borrowing one and ordered another from Amazon. They are inexpensive, but it definitely was a bit annoying. Just bad luck on my part I guess, but if it does happen to you, it's something to look out for (the end was plugged up and couldn't be inserted into a USB slot).

Fortunately I do not have the issue with the sound not coming in for a few seconds. Mine comes in right away. I also didn't bother attaching the bluetooth antenna, as I never plan to use it. For me this is strictly for my PC, and in terms of placement it makes little sense for me to do it any other way.

Overall I'm very happy with this purchase and will probably eventually add the subwoofer. There are some alternatives out there, but depending on space requirements and what you already have, they might not really be worth it. But that's always a personal decision.

As it is, these have a great soundstage, are clear, and are very solid in detail.

Oh and a note on the banana plugs, they require a bit of force to get in but they will go in, and you don't need to worry about damage or anything, they're designed to work that way.

Edit- Wound up returning these. The lows and highs just weren't where I wanted them to be. I wound up getting an AudioEngine subwoofer, but it just would not wake up from sleep most of the time, and once you're used to the subwoofer that really reduces the sound enjoyment when it's not coming on (especially as you'll be configuring the crossover for it).

Audioengine took awhile to get back to me, and I wound up deciding to just return everything. I had the subwoofer for less than 2 days and had the speakers for about a week. Now I'm waiting on refunds before I begin my next step. Shipping everything back cost me about $40 (a little more with buying a new cable too), but that's probably better than having $700+ of equipment I'm not happy with and might worry about down the line.

There was a rare mic feedback style crackle I'd heard once or twice a day, not sure if that was going to be a long term issue either, but with everything together I decided that was best for me. I did decide to ding a star.

Hopefully things work out for you if you go with this option. I might suggest going with the cheaper A2+ however and a different subwoofer. As for me, chances are I will just go with a separate dac and studio monitors, and just work with that. Space does become a bit of an issue with that, but I will try and make things work. Or I'll just keep my current speakers, Edifier Exclaims, which are definitely a tier below but are perfectly okay for casual watching, listening and gaming.

I am a melomaniac. I am 64 and remember music systems from the 1970's with amps and pre amps and the sound from these old tube systems would make an angel cry it was so crisp, clear and beautiful. Hard to find that tone anymore. I was BLOWN AWAY with the quality of the sound from these speakers. Reminds me of listening to fine music back in the 1970's. This company gets it. I will be buying many more audio items from them. And, they are attractive and well built. Hard to find these days.

I have owned an original pair of Audioengine A2 speakers for over a decade now, and they've been incredible for their size. Amazing bass, great soundstaging and mids and wonderful highs. However, the woofer on one has started to tear at the surround, causing distortion, so I thought I would take the opportunity to upgrade to the H3s.

I read some reviews which were quite complimentary, so I ordered a pair and… I was immediately disappointed.

While the highs were good, the mids were more noticeable than on the A2s, being somewhat somewhat tipped up to give a bit more vocal presence.

However, the big noticeable loss was in the bass. Even with the bass in the regular (no subwoofer) position, these speakers were very lacking in bass compared to the smaller A2s! While on most any song you can feel air moving out the A2 ports - but much less from the H3s.

In short, while the A2s sound a lot like a more expensive high fidelity speaker, the H3s sound more like a good computer speaker - rather faint praise, I'm afraid.

I don't know why Audioengine changed their house sound, but the H3s look good but don't sound great.

I got these as computer speakers to replace some powered Polk speakers that no longer worked with Windows 11. I have them connected via USB to my Windows machine, and via Bluetooth to a Chromebook and my phone. I am pretty impressed so far. They sound a little 'brassy' but have good fidelity and range for the size. You can crank them LOUD without substantial distortion (weirdly, the volume was low until I connected them via Bluetooth then switched back to USB). They are well constructed and packed very nicely. I like the magnetic grills. As you might expect from the size, bass is the only weakness here. I got a Kanto Sub6 to pair them with, and it's a good combo.

Arrived today 16/01/19 so will need recommended 40 - 50hr run in period before I can review properly. I have pc volume up to 50% and I can’t turn volume knob on left speaker very far, meaning they’re loud! I will edit, update in a few weeks after living with them.

Also the 3rd photo will show the Audioengine S8 subwoofer which arrived today, makes my listening experience all that much richer. Steely Dan - Cousin Dupree has blown me away even though I’ve heard it a hundred times before. Still jiggling about with the all important 3 knobs on back of sub, volume, crossover, phase to get the perfect rich balance for me.

Unable to handle HD Audio

I bought these back in February of this year, having watched ALOT of videos online to try to complete my desk set up. I bought these as I wanted a pair of speakers to be capable with handling high quality audio in light of developments in streaming services. These speakers sounded ok to start with, and did not feel they sounded as good as many videos suggested. However when Apple Music moved to Lossless Audio that is when the inability of the speakers to deal with high frequencies became apparent. So hence I would not recommend these in the high fidelity audio phase we find ourselves in. Raising these concerned with AudioEngine but doubt it there is anything that can be done.

mac incompatable?

Since my Mac Mini had its last update the blue tooth keeps dropping out which is very frustrating and time consuming to re-establish. When viewing multiple media e.g live video links, now tv etc sometimes the audio commentary comes from both the audioengine speakers and the mac mini (they have a tinny speaker sound) which is annoying and distracting.
Come on Audioengine fix this problem with an upgrade soon please. The sound quality of you speakers is good-excellent.
