BACKGROUND/CONTEXT:
I owned these speakers for a total of ~8 months. I had my first pair from July 2021 till about November 2021, which then ended up being replaced with a new pair that I owned till February. The reason these were in my possession for such a short period of time was because both speakers suffered the same fate of blowing out. These speakers also blew out at relatively low volumes on my computer (around 50% volume on Windows, and about 50% on whichever streaming application I was utilizing). Initially, I believed that my first pair had been faulty, so I ordered a replacement; however, the same exact issue occurred on my second pair, so I knew that these speakers were simply problematic for me.
TL;DR: I had these speakers blow out on me twice, which is why I currently do not own them.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS (Build quality and sound profile):
Note: These were around $260 at the time of purchasing. These are not my current opinions.
These speakers were an upgrade from the Creative Sound BlasterX Kratos S5 2.1 Gaming Speaker, which was a muddied and lack-luster 2.1 system. At the time, however, they were average sounding to me. I wanted to upgrade to something of the same size profile that had a clearer and fuller profile. I gravitated toward the A2+, as I believed in the misconception that these were phenomenal sounding high fidelity speakers (They do not claim to be this, but certain reviews of this product facilitated that idea). I had also seen them on a multitude of setups and thought they fit aesthetic of my own. Upon opening these speakers, I was surprised by the overall weight of these, as they were relatively small. The heftiness only contributed to feeling of "premium-ness". I give props to AE for their absolutely exceptional packaging and inclusion of accessories. The setup was unique to me, as I had never used speaker wire prior to getting these. After having connected them to my computer, I was blown away by the sound. I had never owned "premium" audio equipment, so my only frame of reference was sub-par gaming speakers. These speakers felt warm, rich, and just overall clean. I even got to rehash the subwoofer from the old 2.1 system before upgrading to a Klipsch 400W 12" subwoofer (which was very much overkill for 3" desktop speakers). One thing that I initially really appreciated about the speakers were their very defined mid-range. Even as someone who was significantly less knowledgeable in audio reproduction, I was still able to appreciate the sound these speakers put out. I will not go too in depth about bass, as I had only used these speakers without a subwoofer for about a couple hours total, just know that it is fairly average for casual music listening but sub-par if you decide to utilize it for film/bass-dependent music.
CURRENT PERSPECTIVE:
Disregarding the fact that these had blown out on me, I currently believe these speakers are not worth the absurdly high price. Although I still believe the mid-range is warm and quite rich, both the low-end and high-end struggle to reproduce sounds nicely. This leaves you with a speaker that lacks clarity on two very crucial frequency ranges. Even after the addition of a subwoofer, the lack of EQ options on the speaker do not allow you to setup an appropriate crossfade, which in turn create bass frequencies that cancel. These speakers still look phenomenal though, and packaging is premium enough to justify a higher price tag, but not $260. For reference, as soon as I refunded my A2+, I went ahead and purchased a pair of KRK RP5 G4 Studio Monitors for the exact same price (These monitors are also fairly controversial, but I personally really enjoy their soundstage and less colored sound).
WRAPPING THINGS UP (Pros and Cons):
Pros:
- Spectacular packaging
- Additional cables that allow for multiple ways to connect to a source
- Rich mid-range for small profile
- Premium build quality (hefty with a clean finish)
- Smaller setups will benefit from the size
- Volume does get relatively loud
Cons:
- Highs are lacking clarity
- Bass is quite average from 90hz to 200hz, anything below that is quite awful without a subwoofer
- The speakers do not do a great job at stereo imaging
- Speakers are impossible to EQ without a 3rd party software
- The price is absurd for over glorified desktop speakers
- Subtle details in music get lost, making these speakers terrible for mixing/mastering (This is not what these speakers are intended for, but it is something to keep in mind)
- Personally, these blew out on me twice at pretty normal listening volumes.
A few notes:
- I do not believe these speakers are horrible, I just think the price you pay for them is not justified.
- I had a quite negative experience with them because they blew out twice, I've never seen that happen to anyone else.
- If you really want something in a small package with a multitude of connection options and a sound that's fine for almost all music genres, I'd probably recommend these if you can get them for cheaper.
- If you are looking for accurate sound, stop looking at high fidelity monitors and take a look at studio monitors. They tend to be in same price range (or a tad higher) but are much more sonically accurate.
Executive summary:
I upgraded to these AudioEngine A2+ speakers from the $20 speakers I’d been using since I got my desktop PC. These are so much better. These sound as good or better than any speakers I’ve ever owned, even ones that are much more expensive. They are worth every penny. I have zero regrets and would recommend them to anybody. I am not an audio expert and I have not done exhaustive comparisons between these and a lot of other kinds of speakers.
Details:
My $20 speakers were OK but after 6 months of pandemic working-at-home I was definitely ready for a sound improvement. I read a bunch of reviews of different computer speakers. There were a lot of speakers around the $100-150 price point, but I decided to splurge on these at over $250 because the reviews were good and I figured that you get what you pay for. I have no idea whether these are better than any of the ones I didn’t buy.
My first take upon unboxing was that these folks care about what they’re selling. The packaging was extremely well done. Each speaker came in its own individual cloth bag, and the rest of the box was very well put together. Obviously this has nothing to do with the sound quality, but when people pay so much attention to what’s on the outside, chances are pretty good that they care a lot about the insides too.
The physical size of these is perfect for my limited desktop. I had considered getting the larger A5 instead and after seeing these, I’m glad I didn’t, they would have been much too bulky for my particular setup. The wiring setup is very easy. All inputs plug in to the left speaker and the right speaker is just a slave that connects to the right via speaker wire. The left speaker also contains all of the electronics like the Bluetooth, USB DAC, and amplifier. So it tends to run a bit warmer than the right speaker but not overly hot. They give you every cable you’ll need for all the different inputs.
I turned them on and started listening. My music source is Amazon Music HD. They immediately sounded fantastic, but after making this investment I decided to do a bit of research and figure out how to optimize them for the best listening.
First I got equalizer software for my PC. I use the APO equalizer, with the Peace GUI. This is an amazing piece of software for the price ($0), and it lets you customize just about every aspect of your sound. Everybody has different preferences, and ears with different ages, and varying sensitivities at different frequencies, and Peace/APO lets you tweak the equalization so you can get it sounding just right for you. It’s a huge improvement over the flat response that a computer gives you by default, and far more capable than the equalizer that came with my sound card.
Next I tilted the speakers upwards so that they point directly at my head from where they’re sitting on my desk. This made a huge difference in the mid-to-high frequencies. I ended up buying the AudioEngine DS1 speaker stands. They’re custom fitted to the A2+ speakers and even though their angle is not adjustable, it’s perfect for my specific layout. This brings up the point that a PC sound system is usually used by just one person, so you can position the speakers so that your head is in the perfect “sweet spot” of the sound field. Of course that is possible with any PC speakers.
These speakers have a bunch of different inputs, all of which can operate simultaneously. From my desktop PC I connect them to the on-board sound card via the provided 3.5mm cable. From my laptop I connect via a dedicated USB DAC that I bought because otherwise my laptop just wasn’t able to produce anything like the great sound I was getting from my desktop. I knew before I bought them that they had multiple inputs but that turned out to be an unexpectedly nice feature because I can switch seamlessly between audio from both computers, and even hear sound effects from both systems at the same time when I need to. I am only using the analog inputs. I did not try the built-in Bluetooth. I did try the built-in USB DAC, and I was unable to get it to sound as good as either of my other sources.
Overall the sound from these is superb - the highs are crystal clear with zero tinniness and I can’t think about any aspect of the sound that I’m unhappy with. One comment I see in a lot of the A2 reviews is that people think the bass is lacking. It’s true that these don’t thump you out of your seat like a dedicated subwoofer would, or even speakers with bigger drivers. But the bass they deliver is super clear. I can hear every nuance of a jazz bassline, and low drum beats with no problem at all. I personally have no issue with the bass on these, but if that ever changes they also have RCA outputs that can be used to drive a dedicated subwoofer if I feel like adding one some day.
Top reviews from other countries
- fühlt sich wertig an, gute Verarbeitung
- detailreicher Sound
- auf Ständer schraubbar
- 250€ durchaus wert
- 3 Eingänge, SUB-Out
- kein Brummen
Kontra:
In my sitting room I have an ancient pair of Spendor BC1 speakers with high quality amplification, tuner and CD. That system would cost £5000 to replace with new kit of the same standard.
Not to my surprise the quality is intermediate between the two.
I tend to listen to classical music at moderate levels - except when playing Wagner! These speakers are definitely good enough for me to listen to when at the computer or sitting elsewhere in the spare bedroom. I have the volume turned down quite low (12 o'clock on the control knob and 25% output from the computer). That's plenty loud enough when sitting two feet in front of them, and I think that you could sit anywhere in a small room and never run out of power.
The bass is slightly boomy and you definitely would not want an external subwoofer. I am using the USB input. This does mean no tone control. I could use the headphone jack (also supplied) and use the PC soundcard which does have tone controls. On the other hand the soundcard within the computer probably has higher distortion anyway. I will experiment.
The main point is that I now have something worth listening to, and the freedom to listen to anything available over the internet. I bought the red ones and they are quite pretty.
Since writing this I have moved them from my desktop to a shelf above it, and found that the bass quality is less boomy and the stereo imaging a bit better. Even at this price level, care with speaker placement makes a difference. For your room and your ears, you may find the best place is not where I would put them.

Erster Eindruck
============
=============
Gut, also vielleicht kein Lautsprecher für beliebige Aufgaben.
Fazit
=============
They sit either side of my computer monitor, they sit on the Oak work top upon Oak mini stands I put together to to get them at the correct height/angle.
I'm sitting very close to the speakers <1 metre from either.
The sound stage is very impressive. OK no great thumping base, but I could add a sub for that should I want it - which I don't.
They can go louder than I find comfortable - (Though I'm right on top of them - Not trying to fill a large room)
They were bought to replace my previous set-up because re-arranging my office meant there was no longer room for my old NAD 3020 amp and monitor speakers. This system had produced a sound superior to almost every friend's computer for many years and seen off about 10 upgraded computer towers... I thought they'd be sorely missed... but 5 days in with the Audioengines and I'm beginning to hear why they get rave reviews - I really like them !
OK - Gripes that the volume control is behind the left speaker, which for my set-up isn't the best of access...
(Memo to self that next keyboard will have a mechanical rotary volume control - the one thing I still miss from the NAD amp)
